BSA Troop # 17

Welcome !

Welcome to Troop 17

Troop 17 is a boy run Scout troop

located in Phoenix just south of South Mountain Park (the largest inner city park in the country). The Troop is made up of Scouts ages 11-18, that enjoy hanging out, learning new skills, exploring the wilderness, and most of all, Having Fun!

The Aims of our Troop include instilling the values of Scouting in young Scouts so they will be prepared to serve others, to make ethical choices over their lifetime, and to achieve their full potential.

The Path to Eagle

The Rank of Eagle Scout awaits you at the summit of your Scouting career.
As you progress through the ranks, Troop 17 will be there to enable and encourage you to complete all the requirements.

 The Patrol Method

The troop is made up of patrols, which are made up of scouts that are from the same age group. They work as a team at all times. They will often become best friends.

 Personal Growth

Living by the Scout Oath and Law will give you an even greater appreciation for God, Country, and Family. The opportunity to grow personally through Scouting is huge.

Adult Leadership

We have a long history of guiding young men through their scouting journey. It takes a team of dedicated adult leaders to make it all happen.

Introducing our Troop 17 Scouters

Our troop is led "by" the Scouts instead of “for" the scouts. Our adult leaders ensure that the Troop stays safe and are always around for advise, guidance, requirement sign-off and, most important, rides to outdoor adventure locations.  Each is dedicated to providing Scouts the best scouting experience imaginable.

   Chris Grosjean - Scoutmaster

My name is Chris Grosjean and I have been a registered member of BSA for 16 years. I currently serve the troop as the Scoutmaster. I have been in this position for the past 6 months. I enjoy volunteering for this role because it allows me to have a front row seat as the youth learn how to develop their leadership, organization and communication skills.

Other positions of leadership thatI have held include Assistant Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, Committee Chairman, District Commissioner and Associate Lodge Advisor. As a Scout Leader, I have completed IOLS, DYLC, Leave No Trace, Powderhorn and Sea Badge training. I have also earned my Wood Badge beads an am a proud member of the Owl patrol. I have enjoyed my time in Scouting and I have been recognized with the Silver Beaver and Distinguished Commissioner awards.

I am proud of my commitment to BSA and the youth we serve. Other hobbies of mine include hiking, kayaking and cooking. I am also an active member of a Sea Scout Ship, a Venturing Crew and Foothills Baptist Church

      Davina Baird - Assistant Scoutmaster

As an Assistant Scoutmaster, I have the privilege of working directly with our Scouts as a guide during meetings and on outings. This summer I joined the Scouts for my first experience at Camp Geronimo, and we worked together to achieve the Big “G” Gold award! Being outdoors and active is an opportunity to make many wonderful memories. I’ve been a part of Scouting BSA previously as a Committee Member and Cubmaster, and I love it! I’m also a teacher and have worked with young teens my entire career. Watching young men grow up and helping to coach and mentor that process is one of my sweet spots in life. Both of my sons are a part of Troop 17, and because the older Scout enjoyed the Troop so much, we knew that my younger son would thrive there as well. This kind, active, and Scout-Focused Troop is a great place, and we hope you will join us!

      Larry Wolfson - Assistant Scoutmaster

As Assistant Scoutmaster, I am responsible for assisting the Scoutmaster in helping guide the Scouts as they grow into successful leaders. My role also includes reinforcing and reviewing Scout progress as they advance in rank through learned scout skills along the trail toward their scouting and life goals. I have served in a Scout leadership role for over 20 years and am proud to have had a small part in guiding over a dozen Scouts in Troop 17 to earn the rank of Eagle Scout, including my son. I want your son to be one too! Other positions that I have held are Wolf, Bear and Webelos Den Leader, Assistant Cubmaster, and Scoutmaster. In addition to my current role for the troop, I’m also a District Activities Leader. I have received my Woodbadge beads through participation in adult leadership training followed by participating as a staff member on two following courses. Professionally, I was an IT manager for Maricopa County until retirement. My son, now 26, credits the leadership skills he developed in scouts for his current management position. My daughter, now 24, wishes that girls had been able to join in the adventure when she was younger. We welcome you to join our Troop 17 scouting family, where games with a purpose are part of the adventure!

       Eric Alsop - Assistant Scoutmaster

As an Assistant Scoutmaster, I am responsible for helping to guide the youth leaders in the troop. My primary role is helping lead the Zany Dancing Bananas Patrol, an energetic and enthusiastic group of first year scouts. As with many adult leaders in Troop 17, I am also an Eagle Scout and I will help guide your son to achieve that goal. Other positions I have held are Cubmaster and Den Leader. I am very involved in the STEM community in Phoenix, volunteering to judge both the AZ State Science Fair and the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). I also work closely with AZ high school and college students interested in internships in the biosciences. Professionally, I am a bioinformatician at a non-profit research institute in Phoenix and hold a Ph.D. in computational biology. I have a son who is a scout in Troop 17, and we look forward to you joining us on our scouting journey!

            Timothy Liska - Assistant Scoutmaster

Hi everyone, my name is Timmy and I am one of the Assistant Scoutmasters of Troop 17!

I am currently studying Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University. I have been with Troop 17 for a long time! When I was a Cub Scout and my older brother was part of the Troop, I tagged along sometimes. Troop 17 is a great, healthy Troop! Through this Troop, I was able to make friends, develop my character, acquire vast outdoor skills, cultivate leadership skills, and ultimately get my Eagle Scout. Scouting is the second biggest contributor to the man I am today, right behind striving to follow Christ in my daily life. Now I have transitioned into an adult leadership role. I enjoy being an adult leader because now I get to help Scouts obtain all the benefits from the scouting program that I did! Plus, scouting never gets old; there is always fun to be had!”

                   Les Brown - Assistant Scoutmaster

I am the father of two boys who are currently Scouts with Troop 17. I have been involved in scouting with my sons for over six years. First as a parent, then for the past five years as a Cub Scout Den Leader, Troop Committee Member and Committee Equipment Coordinator. My current position in scouting is as an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 17.
